Maker's Mark Bourbon, aka Kentucky Champagne. Growing up in Kentucky, it doesn't take a man very many years to learn that Maker's is the favorite in a state drowning in caramel colored liquid gold. From their trademark red wax to their amazing and fun ad campaigns, Maker's is one of the more recognizable bourbons on the planet.
Brief History:
William Samuels Sr. began production of Maker's Mark in 1954, and the first bottle was filled in 1958. At a visit to the distillery, the story of the name and the signature red wax was told to our tour and it was actually Samuel's wife that conjured up both of these idea's. She told Bill that if you want to sell bourbon, you have to stand out. I believe that the red wax is one of the things that propelled Maker's to it's greatness today.
For The Snob In Us:
Maker's Mark is 45% ABV and the mash build is made up of corn, and red winter wheat. Wheat being substituted for the traditional rye, results in a much softer mouth feel, which for some hardcore bourbon drinkers, is it's downfall. I, on the other hand believe it is what makes Maker's soar. I love the sweet softness and I love the vanilla and caramel undertones that come right along with it. It is perfectly balanced and nothing grabs your attention at any point in the drink. And that is the way I like it. The seven years it hangs out in the aged and charred white oak barrels seam to bring the perfect amount of spice to round out the sweet tender goodness on the way down.
What Really Matters:
If Maker's Mark were a woman, she would be that tall, caramel haired cutie that doesn't realize just what a catch she is. Therefore, she is much sweeter than most the other gals. She doesn't linger too long, and she really knows how to mix it up. She can get along with anyone, and all your bros will fall in love too. You do have to be careful though. As with any tenderoni, if you're not careful she'll leave you naked, face down and all alone if you take her for granted. So, do the right thing and treat her right, and she will never let you down.
Cheers, to all of life's celebrations. May they be plentiful, and may they all be sweet.
