Book Rating: 5 out of 5
Can't Put It Down Rating: 5 out of 5
Holy S**t This Book Changed My Life Rating: 4 out of 5
Ok, ok... So my Holy S**t rating system might be a little over the top since these are fiction books I am reviewing, but I am a writer and have a flare for the dramatic. With that said, now that I can say that YOU is my favorite book, I guess it kinda did change my life.
Seriously friends, this is a good one. Caroline Kepnes is a first time author and she knocked it out of the park with Joe Goldberg, the main character in this story. The premise of the book is simple, girl walks into a book store, guy behind the counter swipes her credit card and because he was completely captivated by her, he decided to do what a lot of us might do and Google her name. The aftermath of this simple action becomes an obsession for Joe, and subsequently, an obsession for us as readers. The entire story takes place inside Joe's head and takes us on a journey through the darkest corners of a stalker's mind.
I'm not sure why this story resonated with me so much. Maybe it was the taunting humor Joe used throughout the book. Maybe it was the way Caroline used modern technology/social media to really bring some interesting layers of the story to life. Maybe, just maybe it's because somewhere deep inside my brain I am one sick puppy and this novel tickled my dark side's fancy. Whatever it was, it is a magically written story that will captivate you until the very end.
I don't want to go into too many details because they are all there waiting for you in this must read novel. Just make sure you have cleared a couple of days to sit on your ass and read. I finished this book in three days, it was seriously all I could think about. Luckily for me and the rest of us, the sequel, HIDDEN BODIES, the chronicle of Joe Goldberg's latest obsession will be arriving in February! Boom!
